The University of Hawaii football team filled a big need in a big way, securing a commitment from a 6-foot-2, 320-pound nose tackle.
Samiuela Akoteu said he travels to Honolulu on Sunday afternoon and begins summer-school classes on Monday.
"I’m excited," Akoteu said.
Penitito Faalologo and Kory Rasmussen exited spring training as the top two nose tackles for the Warriors’ 3-4 defense. Defensive end Kennedy Tulimasealii can slide to the nose in sub-packages. Akoteu is projected to provide immediate help for the Rainbow Warriors, who do not have a bye during their 13-game regular season this fall.
As a Junipero Serra High (Gardena, Calif.) senior, Akoteu signed a letter of intent with Fresno State on Feb. 5, 2014.
But then, according to Akoteu, "a lot of family problems happened and I was late on some (school) work. I ended up getting dropped (by Fresno)."
Akoteu said he completed classes to meet the NCAA eligibility requirements. He also worked in construction alongside his father. The work was focused on building block walls.
"They always made me carry all the bricks," he said. "It was hard work. I’m used to hard work. Basically, the work was from when you woke up until 5 or 6."
He said he also kept fit playing rugby.
"Construction work or play rugby," Akoteu said. "That’s all I did."
Akoteu started on both the offensive and defensive lines at Serra. He was named to the MaxPreps California Division II All-State first team as a blocker. The Cavaliers amassed 5,988 yards, produced two 1,000-yard rushers and scored 75 touchdowns in 2013. On defense, Akoteu had 61 tackles, including 11 for losses.
"In high school, I started both ways, but I always favored defense," he said. "I like to be able to hit somebody."
Akoteu said he has played rugby with UH defensive end Jahlani Tavai. UH linebacker Malachi Mageo and Akoteu were Serra classmates.
Akoteu said he grew up in an area where "it’s basically you play ball" or participate in gang activities. He chose sports.
He praised point recruiter Lance Samuseva and UH head coach Norm Chow.
"He’s pretty cool," Akoteu said of Chow. "He seems understanding. He really cares. It’s more than just football with him."
