University of Hawaii sophomore Chloe Barr led a group of four Rainbow Wahine players named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-America teams on Friday.
Barr, the Big West Player of the Year, made the All-America second team after scoring a league-high 52 goals. She closed the season by scoring five goals in three matches at the NCAA championships.
UH senior Zoe Respondek, junior Paula Chillida Esforzado and sophomore Claire Nixon were honorable mention picks.
Chillida Esforzado, a third-team All-American last year, finished the season second on the team with 43 goals and Nixon added 35. Respondek contributed 14 goals and was a catalyst for the Wahine offense and one of the team’s top defenders.
UH went 19-10 this spring and captured its second Big West championship in the past three years. The Wahine then placed seventh in the NCAA tournament.
Carney to head ‘Iolani boys volleyball
‘Iolani announced Friday that former Raiders standout Sean Carney has been named its new boys volleyball coach.
Carney takes over for Carl Rallita, who stepped down after three seasons.
Carney was the head coach at Maryknoll the past two seasons, capped with a third-place finish in the ILH last year. Carney’s Spartans went 2-1 against the Raiders last year and ‘Iolani finished fourth in the league.
The 29-year-old was an assistant on Hawaii’s staff in 2013 after four years of playing for the Rainbow Warriors, serving the final two as team captain, followed by a pro career.
He led ‘Iolani to a state championship as a player in 2004, when he was selected as the Honolulu Advertiser’s player of the year.
