The 18,844 people who started the Honolulu Marathon on Sunday represent an increase of 21% from last year, and the 8,361 who lined up for the Start to Park 10k is 20% more than 2023.
The combination of the heat, hills and 40% of the field being first-time marathoners makes medical situations more likely than at other similar events.
The marathon course has 15 medical stations and a main medical area near the finish line.
A medical report was not available yesterday, but as usual, a noticeable number of runners needed aid, and received it. At 10 a.m., five hours into the event, the main medical tent was nearly full, and a medical volunteer said that while there were no critically ill runners, there were more than the usual number that needed to be transported to hospitals for treatment, because of the increased number of starters.
Chris Pohl, a nurse practitioner from Seattle, ran the Honolulu Marathon for the first time Sunday. He said he was impressed with the organization of the event and the level of medical care and preventative measures.
“I feel the organization did a great job meeting the capacity,” Pohl said. “I never felt crowded out, that I couldn’t get water or anything I needed.
“I did notice someone on the course who looked to be in bad shape. I stopped and offered to help, but volunteers were there very quickly and had it taken care of.”
Along Came Jones
Ben Jones, 34, of New York, achieved his goal of running marathons in all 50 states Sunday — and at least one in every state in under three hours. He started 15 years ago, and saved Hawaii for last.
He covered the Honolulu course in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 29 seconds.
Chun, Dill continue streak
The two runners who have completed every Honolulu Marathon since the first one in 1973 kept their streaks alive Sunday.
Jerold Chun finished in 7:17:51. Gary Dill came in at 9:10:25.
Tom, Beaman first Kamaaina
Gabriel Tom of Honolulu was the first Kamaaina finisher in 2:52.09, followed closely by Shawn Morimoto one second later.
Amanda Beaman was first among women Kamaaina at 3:07:14.
Watt, Breaux fastest residents
Kathryn Watt of Kailua was the first woman Hawaii resident to finish, crossing the line in 3:01:52. Megan Goulden of Honolulu was next in 3:06:49.
Jared Breaux’s 2:44:49 led the male Hawaii residents, followed by Jay Dela Cruz (2:49:55), and David Easa (2:50:30). Easa’s time was especially impressive, as he ran in the age 50-54 age group.
Wheelchair winners
Kota Hokinue of Japan was first to cross the marathon finish line. He won the elite male wheelchair division with a time of 1:35:37.
Wakako Tsuchida, also of Japan, won the female division, finishing in 1:52.51
