Snorkeler, 29, dies; 2 others hurt in rough North Shore surf
A 29-year-old snorkeler died and two other snorkelers suffered lacerations after getting in trouble in the surf at Three Tables on Oahu’s North Shore Monday afternoon.
Honolulu Ocean Safety, the Honolulu Fire Department and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded at 3:20 p.m. to the scene where Ocean Safety rescued two of the snorkelers, a male and female, who suffered lacerations. EMS evaluated them on scene and they declined to be taken to the hospital.
HFD said it responded with five HFD units and 14 personnel, with the first unit arriving at 3:27 p.m. and starting the search in the water.
“It was reported that a 29-year-old male was snorkeling with some friends when he was caught in some large surf and separated from his group,” an HFD news release. “HFD and personnel from Honolulu Ocean Safety Department continued the search from the air, land, and water. OSD personnel recovered the body of the missing snorkeler and brought him to shore where he was transferred to EMS personnel.”
Ocean Safety had posted strong current, no swimming and no lifeguard on-duty signs at the beach. The surf was 6 to 10 feet and building at the time of the incident.
