Waianae house fire that killed 7 pets was a $95,000 accident

The Honolulu Fire Department Investigator has ruled that the single-family house fire in Waianae that killed four cats and three dogs was a $95,000 accident.

The investigator said Sunday that the source of the ignition at 86-020 Hoaha St. was “an activation of the heating element of an electric stove after a half-filled package of foodstuff was placed on the appliance.”

Damage was estimated at $85,000 to the property and $10,000 to the contents.

HFD reported receiving a 911 call regarding the property at about 4:40 p.m. Saturday and responded with eight units staffed with approximately 26 personnel. The first unit arrived on the scene at 4:46 p.m. and found light smoke showing from the side of the structure, according to HFD.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 4:56 p.m. and had it extinguished about 10 minutes later. The home was reported to be unoccupied at the time of the fire, HFD said, however, the seven animals were found dead.
