Salt Lake’s Shima Park honors community member
People gathered for the renaming of Likini Street Mini Park to Howard Shima Likini Street Mini Park on Tuesday. The park was dedicated to 97-year-old Shima, a Salt Lake resident of 56 years, who served on the Neighborhood Board No. 18 for 24 years and advocated for the completion of two neighborhood parks, waged an ongoing graffiti clean up and inspired the widening of Salt Lake Boulevard.

Howard Shima, with his wife Ethel, said “wow!” after the unveiling. Howard, a former U.S. Army structural engineer and Director and Building Superintendent for the City and County of Honolulu (under former Mayor Frank Fasi), helped redesign the original plans for a 25-meter pool into a 50-meter pool at Salt Lake District Park. Ethel, 94, spearheaded the development of the Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library.

“Howard Shima and with his wife Ethel have been instrumental in building and shaping our Salt Lake community into what it is today,” said Councilmember Radiant Cordero. “In renaming Likini Street Mini Park after Mr. Shima, we celebrate and recognize his 70-year legacy of volunteerism, his service to our country in the United States Army, his service to the City as Director and Building Superintendent, and his significant contributions to our Salt Lake community.”
