Manu O Ke Kai ruled the waves once again Saturday to claim the AAA Division of Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a’s Windward Kai Regatta.
Kaneohe claimed the AA Division despite a few disqualifications.
Kalihi Kai won the A Division for the first time this season.
Manu O Ke Kai won 17 of 44 races and finished with 186 points to win AAA (29-44 events) in windy conditions at Kailua Beach Park. Na Keiki O Ka Moi placed second with 99 and Lokahi was third with 91. Points are awarded on a 7-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
Manu O Ke Kai won five youth, six senior, one novice and five open races.
“There is no huhu (drama) in our club and with our crews,” said David Fuga, a member of Manu O Ke Kai’s winning men senior crew. “Our club also never stops paddling. We paddle year-round.”
Manu O Ke Kai and Kaneohe claimed their divisions for the third time in three regattas.
“It’s surprised me. We had a lot of guys coming out this year. We’re doing good,” said Manu O Ke Kai paddler Moku Sanborn, who was a member of the winning men 50 and 55 crews.
Kaneohe finished with 106 points in AA (15-28 crews). Lahui O Koolauloa finished second with 97 and Alapa Hoe placed third with 70.
Kalihi Kai had 36 points in A (14-fewer crews), with Haleiwa Outrigger second with 24, and Waikiki Yacht Club and Windward Kai tied for third with 23.
Kaneohe took a 99-97 lead by winning the mixed men and women 40 race — event No. 43 of 44. Lahui O Koolauloa placed third in the event.
In the closing mixed men and women race, Lahui O Koolauloa crossed first, but was disqualified for finishing in the wrong lane. Kaneohe was awarded the race victory. Without the disqualification, Kaneohe and Lahui O Koolauloa have tied for first.
“We practice with this kind of wind and this current. Everybody is just working together as a team,” Kaneohe coach Clint Anderson said. “It’s called camaraderie. Everybody working out together and just being a team.”
Kaneohe was disqualified in a pair of early youth races for using illegal paddlers, which cost the club 12 points. Kaneohe’s boys 16 crew also was disqualified for hitting the flag, which wiped out a third-place finish.
“It doesn’t matter for us. We just push through,” Anderson said. “It doesn’t matter about winning or losing. The main things is we get our hui together and everybody is happy. My goal is to have everybody race and everybody have fun.”
Lahui O Koolauloa, the association’s newest club, won three of the first five races and led the regatta through 12 events with 55 points. Manu O Ke Kai was second with 52 and Kaneohe had 51.
Lahui O Koolauloa, which is based in Kahana Bay, started competing in 2017 with fewer than 50 paddlers, according to coach Vonn Chee. The club now has 160-170 paddlers and will be permanently in AA, according to Chee.
“Our demographic is such a large region,” Chee said. “The nearest canoe club is either Keahiakahoe in Kahaluu or Manu O Ke Kai in Haleiwa. Prior to us starting, there was such a big region of the island that didn’t have exposure to canoe paddling. Slowly through the years we picked up people really by word of mouth.”
Kalihi Kai placed sixth in the A Division at the opening Manu O Ke Kai Regatta and third at last week’s Kalihi Kai Regatta.
“We’ve gotten guys to come out now and we’re rebuilding from the last couple years. It got kind of slow because of COVID,” Kalihi Kai coach Walter Fox said.
Kalihi Kai entered 14 events Saturday after previously entering six in previous years, according to Fox.
The wind, which was blowing toward the shore, made conditions difficult for the paddlers Saturday.
“It was pretty rough, the water,” said Sanborn of Manu O Ke Kai. “The conditions were kind of hard. I almost made a mistake, but it came out good for us guys in the 55s. I was going for the wrong flag.”
Sanborn, the steersman, added the wind pushed his team’s canoe off-course and he guided it toward an incorrect flag. He added he course-corrected the canoe after getting yelled at by the other crew members and a good turn got them back on track.
Manu O Ke Kai won the half-mile race in 4:26:19, 10 seconds ahead of second-place I Mua.
The next Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a event will be the Lokahi Regatta next Saturday at Keehi Lagoon.
