It was a day of lighthearted fun and serious competition for the 67 children and about 35 adults who entered the 16th annual Oahu kite-flying contest at Kapiolani Regional Park. The event was sponsored by the city and county Department of Parks and Recreation.

The city has determined that the Hilton Hawaiian Village sign is a marquee-facia sign, a projecting sign attached to a building. The sign was ruled legal since only the individual letters were measured to determine whether the sign fell within regulations of the law.
