When a new owner took over an old barbershop on King Street, she had hoped to recover the old horse-hair chairs but found that horsehair was no longer available as an upholstery. The Mane Street salon, with its vestiges of an older time in the hair business, is moving — antiques and all — to make room for a lobster restaurant.

More than 200 islanders turned out last night at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel’s Monarch Room to honor Duke Kahanamoku on his 73rd birthday. Kinau Wilder and Monsignor Charles Kekumano presented Kahanamoku with a rare Hawaiian feather cloak, one of many gifts he received during the testimonial dinner.

Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Tommy Kaulukukui, a former University of Hawaii star athlete, lights the flame at the Waikiki Shell to officially start the inaugural Aloha State Games. About 1,000 athletes and an equal number of supporters and officials attended an evening of ceremony and entertainment.

These Marines get an early start aboard the merry-go-round at the 49th State Fair at Kapiolani Park. Cpl. Helen K. Beamer, aboard Charger, is joined by Sgt. Marjorie Kalama, left; Cpl. Delores Algoso; Cpl. Mary Ann Verdoni, recently of Erie, Pa.; and Pfc. Ruth K. Mason, recently of Minneapolis. The last two are new arrivals at Pearl Harbor.
