2 men shot at illegal game room on North School Street

Two men were shot at an illegal game room in Liliha early Sunday after they overpowered one gunman who had entered the building but could not fend off the rest of his crew, police said.

One of about four alleged assailants was arrested Sunday, but the others were unidentified and at large, police said late Sunday afternoon.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s homicide division said at a news conference that about four male suspects exited a silver sedan parked on North School Street before 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

As the first man entered the building housing an illegal game room, the victims realized he had a gun and managed to wrestle away the weapon away by striking him with a blunt object, causing facial injuries.

As this was happening, the other suspects were trying to get into the game room and shot the victims, Thoemmes said. Several suspects fled on School Street in the silver sedan toward Likelike Highway, she said.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated three men and transported them to hospitals, she said.

A 50-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg and was in critical condition, and a 45-year-old man was shot in his right arm and was in serious condition, EMS said. A man in his 20s suffered a head injury and was also in serious condition.

One of the suspects, a 24-year-old man, was arrested Sunday for investigation of attempted murder, according to Thoemmes. The other suspects have not been identified, she said. Anyone with information should call 911 or CrimeStoppers.
