UPDATE: 6:30 p.m.

The Maui Police Department released the identities of six more victims of the Aug. 8 Lahaina wildfire, however the total number of confirmed fatalities remains 115.

The six victims, all of Lahaina, are: Tau Ponali, 66; Valerie Kauffman, 78; Salvador Coloma, 77; Carlo Tobias, 54; Albert Kitaguchi, 62; and Lynn Manibog, 74.

MPD also corrected the age for victim Freeman Tam Lung who was identified Tuesday. He was 80.

Of the 115 confirmed fatalities, 27 have been identified and their families notified, while 22 have been identified but their families have not been located or notified, MPD said this evening.

Earlier today, Gov. Josh Green said in a social media posting that 92% of burn area searched so far.

In a separate social media post late this afternoon, Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said there are 1,054 names on the MPD and FBI list of unaccounted for individuals.

He also said that so far, FBI and MPD “have identified 1,448 individuals who have been located and reported safe,” a number he expects to rise as more people are located.

5 p.m.

West Maui families still seeking places to enroll students in in-person learning may temporarily relocate to designated schools in Central and South Maui, and bus transportation will be provided in coming days, the state Department of Education announced today.

The DOE is “designating the following temporary sites for students to return to learning environments with their teachers and peers to help facilitate the healing process and restore some sense of normalcy as we await clearance for the Lahaina campuses to reopen,” a DOE news release said. “The Lahaina schools will retain their school status, but in temporary locations.”

>> Grades K-5: Students from King Kamehameha III Elementary and Princess Nahienaena Elementary will be temporarily assigned to either Wailuku Elementary, or Kamalii Elementary in Kihei.

>> Grades 6-8: Lahaina Intermediate students will be temporarily assigned to Lokelani Intermediate in Kihei.

>> Grades 9-12: For Lahainaluna High School students, their school will temporarily function as a “school within a school” at Kulanihakoi High School in Kihei.

4:10 P.M.

The Maui Police Department today confirmed reports that a Lahaina family had located their son’s remains at their residence and brought him to the Lahaina Police Station.

In response to a reporter’s question at a news conference Tuesday, Police Chief John Pelletier denied that any human remains from the Aug. 8 wildfire had been brought in to police.

“The individual’s biological relatives are residents of Mexico, and efforts are underway to conduct DNA testing to make a positive identification,” MPD said in a statement.

The teenager’s name has not been formally released but family members have identified him as 14-year-old Keyiro Fuentes, who would have celebrated his 15th birthday Aug. 20.

His charred remains were found on a pile of debris in his bedroom, the family dog lying just a few inches away, his family told NPR. He was wrapped in a tarp taken to the police station.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to assist his family and pay his funeral expenses.

10:40 a.m.

A group of insurance carriers will host an event Thursday for policyholders on Maui to receive help with insurance question, and with filing and processing insurance claims.

Allstate Insurance, Business Insurance Services, Crum & Forster, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Island Insurance, RLI, and Zephyr Insurance will have representatives available Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Citizen Church in Lahaina, 4275 Hine Way in Lahaina.

The Lahaina death toll remained at 115 as of Tuesday night but the FBI said the number of people still unaccounted for is between 1,000 and 1,100.

County, state and federal agencies, including the FBI, are working to compile an accurate list of those still missing two weeks after a firestorm destroyed much of Lahaina on Aug. 8.

The Maui Police Department, meanwhile, released the names of eight more confirmed victims of the Lahaina wildfire disaster Tuesday night.

MPD said the latest confirmed fatalities are: Clyde Wakida, age 74; Todd Yamafuji, 68; Antonia Molina, 64; Freeman Tam Lung, 59; Joseph Schilling, 67; Narciso Baylosis Jr, 67; and Vanessa Baylosis, 67 — all from Lahaina; and Theresa Cook, 72, of California.

Of the 115 confirmed deaths, the families of 21 have been notified, while the families of 22 others have not been located or notified, Maui County officials said.

The county also announced Tuesday night that distribution sites offering food, water and supplies to people affected by Maui wildfires will be transitioning locations, times, days and focus.

The shifts come because electricity and internet service continue to be restored in fire-affected areas, and community-organized efforts are pivoting to long-term aid. The schedule for the remainder of this week is:

Nonperishable food, water and paper supplies sought and no clothing donations. While pick ups have been available, the focus will move to drop offs.
