The second annual Boyd’s Budweiser Hawaiian Snowman (or Snowperson) Building contest eventually ended up in the gutter as all the snow turned to slush. Before it did, 12 teams paid $40 to build a snowperson in the Trade Center Mall downtown; first place went to Free Design and its snowwoman design.

Charles Mokuohai is one of the few men today who make their living building Hawaiian outrigger canoes. He uses the latest in modern implements to carve the vessels that once were products of stone adzes and intricate rituals. Here he uses a gouger to dig out the canoe’s interior.
