UPDATE: 1 a.m.

The flash flood warning for the Big Island has expired. But a flood watch for Maui and the Big Island remains in effect until Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood warning for much of Hawaii island until 1 a.m. Sunday.

Highway 130 in the Puna bound direction is also closed between mile markers 2 and 3. These roads will likely remain closed tonight.”

Areas covered by the warning that may experience flash flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaa, Volcano, Glenwood, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Mountain View, Wood Valley, Hawaiian Acres, Pohakuloa Training Area, Pohakuloa Camp, Keaau, Orchidland Estates, Pahala, Papaikou, Pepeekeo, Pahoa, Punaluu Beach and Honomu, according to the weather service.

3:50 p.m.

The flood watch that previously covered the state has been canceled except for Maui and the Big Island, where it will remain in effect through Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in an update at 3:32 p.m. warned of significant flooding due to the overflow of streams and drainages.

“Roads in several areas may be closed, along with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to runoff,” NWS said. “Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.”

Meanwhile, the flash flood warning for the Big Island has been extended to 7 p.m.

Radar and rain gages showed moderate to heavy rainfall over the South Hilo, Puna, and Kau districts. Peak rain rates were measured at about 1 inch per hour.

Road closures continue and include Highway 11 at Kawa Flats, Wood Valley Road and Kaalaiki Road in the Kau District.

Periods of heavy rainfall will continue through tonight, NWS said.

3:00 p.m.

The flash flood warning for Kauai has been canceled.

1:45 p.m.

The flash flood warning for Kauai has been extended to 4:15 p.m. as heavy rain continues to drench the island.

Radar at 1:01 p.m. indicated moderate to heavy rainfall was moving over the east half of the island.

Water levels were elevated in Hanalei River, which is expected to overflow onto Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Bridge today, NWS said.

Portions of Maalo Road in Lihue and Hauaala Road in Keapana Valley are closed due to flooding, the Kauai Emergency Management Agency said in a release.

Meanwhile, the Kekaha Landfill, green waste services at the Lihue and Kapaa transfer stations, and KCRS HI5 Redemption Center in Kekaha are closed due to inclement weather.

A flash flood warning for the Big Island has been extended until 4 p.m.

Radar at 12:44 p.m. showed heavy rainfall in the Puna and Kau districts. Rain rates were mostly 1 to 2 inches per hour, though NWS recorded periods when rain was falling at up to 3 inches per hour.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Kauai, effective until 1:15 p.m.

Radar showed bands of heavy rainfall moving over the island at 10:08 a.m., with rain falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

The rainfall is expected to further elevate water levels in an already swollen Hanalei River, likely causing an overflow that will close Kuhio Highway.

A flash flood warning for the Big Island has again been extended and is now scheduled to expire at 1 p.m.

Radar data at 9:43 a.m. indicated heavy rain over the southeast half of Hawaii island, though rain rates have slackened to about 1 inch per hour.

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue into tonight, NWS said.

Highway 11 at Kawa Flats, Wood Valley Road and Kaalaiki Road remain closed in the Kau District, while North Kulani Road in the Puna District was recently closed.
