10:45 a.m.

The juvenile female pedestrian who was critically injured this morning after a vehicle struck her and another teen in a hit-and-run collision in Kakaako has died.

The collision occurred at the Kapiolani Boulevard and Kamakee Street intersection just after 6:40 a.m.

Acting Maj. Stason Tanaka of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said the pedestrians were crossing Kapiolani Boulevard in a marked crosswalk when a silver pickup truck traveling westbound on the road struck them.

The truck fled without rendering aid, police said.

Police later located the pickup truck, unoccupied, about a few blocks away from the scene. Police have yet to locate the driver.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the two teenage girls. One was taken in critical condition to a hospital and later died, Tanaka said at a news briefing held at the main police headquarters. The other pedestrian was taken in good condition to a hospital.

Speed appears to be a factor in the collision, Tanaka said.

This is the seventh traffic related collision that occurred on Oahu. The same number of traffic fatalities occurred at the same time last year.

Police are continuing their investigation. Any witnesses to today’s fatal hit-and-run are urged to call HPD’s traffic division at 808-723-3413.
