Man dies, woman arrested after two-car collision near Punchbowl
A 59-year-old male motorist was killed in a two-vehicle collision early Saturday morning in the Makiki area after another vehicle tried to overtake him, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
First responders arrived near the intersection of Prospect and Alapai streets after the crash between two single-occupant SUVs was reported at around 2:30 a.m.
A 59-year-old man who was driving a tan Toyota 4-Runner was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 35-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of a silver Acura was injured but in stable condition. The woman was able to exit the vehicle on her own, according to the Honolulu Fire Department, which sent crews to the crash scene, and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reported that she refused treatment from paramedics.
Police said the woman was driving eastbound on Iolani Avenue at “a high rate of speed” and attempted to overtake the other vehicle, side-swiping the Toyota SUV in the process. As a result of the collision, the male motorist lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a tree, police said.
HPD indicated that speed and alcohol appeared to be contributing factors in the crash.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and first-degree negligent homicide.
