Kilauea volcano began erupting at its summit this afternoon, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halemaumau Crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor, the observatory said.

The eruption occurred a little over an hour after HVO reported an increase in seismic activity and ground movement at the summit this morning.

HVO raised the volcano’s alert level and aviation code from advisory to watch and now warning.

Today’s summit activity comes less than a month after lava stopped flowing into Kilauea’s Halemaumau crater, ending an eruption that began in September 2021.
