LOOKING BACK: An eruption at Kilauea Iki Crater at the end of 1959 was a foreshadowing of what occurred
shortly after the turn of the new year in Kapoho village, when a fissure behind the town opened
up and fiery fountains spewed lava hundreds of feet into the air. Kapoho residents voluntarily evacuated,
and their homes in the Big Island’s Puna district were overrun by molten lava.
