The Kapiolani Park Bandstand hosts numerous concerts, but one that has been held annually for the past 18 years features keiki and the ukulele. Members of Roy Sakuma’s 300-piece children’s band played at the bandstand during the ukulele festival sponsored by the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

Four hundred eight McKinley High School students sat on each other for 2 minutes, 3.43 seconds to set an Oahu record for lap-sitting. Participant Deborah Nishimura explained that McKinley held the event as part of its Crazy Week to challenge other high schools in the state.

Maui’s Jesse Kuhaulua, known as Takamiyama, made a triumphant return to the islands after becoming the only non-Japanese athlete to win a major sumo tournament in Japan. Gov. John A. Burns was on hand to congratulate the 28-year-old sumotori as he made a stop at the state Capitol.
