A fire prompted the closure of Kapiolani Boulevard in both directions between Piikoi and Pensacola.

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a fire in a unit of a 14-unit commercial building Sunday afternoon.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at 3:43 p.m. for a building fire at 1221 Kapiolani Boulevard and sent 11 units staffed with 44 personnel, HFD said in an email. The first firefighters arrived at the scene at 3:48 p.m. to discover heavy black smoke from the first floor. The fire prompted the temporary closure of Kapiolani Boulevard in both directions between Piikoi and Pensacola streets.

Firefighters cleared the building of occupants and no injuries were reported. HFD said the fire appeared to originate from the first-floor ventilation duct.

The fire was brought under control at 4:10 p.m. and extinguished 15 minutes later.

The fire is still under investigation. The cause of the fire and the estimated cost of damage were not immediately available.
