Large brush fire in Pohakuloa Training Area spreads closer to highway
UPDATE: 9 a.m.
A brush fire that broke out Wednesday in the Pohakuloa Training Area has spread to an area one mile from Highway 190 and three miles from Puuanahulu, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
There are no structures threatened at this time.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas of Highway 190 and Daniel K. Inouye Highway as fire crews establish fire breaks.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has extended the red flag warning through tonight for the Kohala, Kona and Kau districts.
A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are forecasted to occur. Strong, gusty tradewinds, dry fuel and low humidity could result in extreme fires that could rapidly spread.
