Recent changes in the Kilauea summit eruption have seen the crusting-over of the lava pond near the western end of the Halemaumau Crater floor. This view of the lava pond vicinity was captured through the lens of a laser rangefinder on April 6, from the western rim of the crater.COURTESY USGS / APRIL 15
Eruptive activity continues within Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea on April 15. Since the beginning of this eruption on Sept. 29, 2021, the crater floor has seen a total rise of about 325 feet. The volume of lava effused since the beginning of this eruption was approximately 18 billion gallons as measured on April 6, according to USGS.COURTESY USGS / APRIL 15

The active lava lake, which has a silvery surface appearance, is visible within the center right of the photo. Within the active lava lake, lava flows from an inlet on the west (bottom) margin toward the east.COURTESY USGS
Lava from the active lava lake (silvery grey surface in lower left quadrant of photo) cascades into the southeast embayment (red surface). It appears there is a gradual rise of the crater floor surface.
