Firefighters extinguish blaze at Ala Moana area apartment, rescue 1

Honolulu firefighters rescued a person after a large fire broke out at a two-story, walk-up apartment building in the Ala Moana area late Monday.

Eleven units with nearly 50 firefighters responded to the blaze at 1203 Rycroft St., next to the Piikoi-Rycroft Mini Park at about 9:25 p.m.

When fire crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the structure, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 9:57 p.m. and extinguished it before 10:30 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services personnel assessed a 59-year-old man for smoke inhalation. He declined to be taken to the hospital.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
