1 woman dead, 1 hospitalized after head-on collision near Sea Life Park

One woman died and another woman was hospitalized in a head-on collision on Kalanianaole Highway near Sea Life Park Hawaii tonight.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said two women, ages 77 and 75, were involved in the crash at around 6:30 p.m., and both suffered multiple injuries.

The 77-year-old woman was in critical condition, but the Honolulu Police Department reported that she was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

EMS reported that the 75-year-old woman is in serious condition.

HPD said that the 77-year-old, who had been driving southbound in a Toyota sedan, veered over the double solid yellow markings on the road and “sideswiped a Toyota pickup truck” that was traveling northbound. She continued and hit a Honda sedan, which the 75-year-old woman was driving.

The collision left one of the women trapped in her car, the Honolulu Fire Department said in a release. It’s not clear which one of the women was trapped, but firefighters used extrication equipment, including battery-powered hydraulic rescue tools, to free her from the car.

EMS personnel administered advanced life support on both women at the scene of the crash. Kalanianaole Highway was closed in both directions between both driveways of Sea Life Park.

It’s not clear why the 77-year-old woman veered into oncoming traffic. HPD said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor, and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

It’s the third traffic fatality on Oahu this year. There were five fatalities at this time last year.
