Honolulu Fire Department search and recovery divers today are searching a canal at Bellows Air Force Station in Waimanalo as part of the massive effort to find missing 6-year-old girl, Isabella Kalua.

Honolulu Police Department homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes said during a news conference at HPD headquarters Friday that police recovered a garbage bag containing items Thursday afternoon from the canal, which is up to 10 feet deep in places.

“It is too premature to say whether the items are related to this investigation,” she said, and would not say what was found in the bag.

The divers and police, who today were searching the surrounding area at Bellows, are looking for other possible related items or evidence, Thoemmes said while discussing the latest developments in the search.

Isabella, named Ariel Sellers at birth, was initially fostered then adopted within the last year by Sonny and Lehua Kalua. They told police she has been missing since Sunday night when she was last seen in her bedroom.

On Thursday, police said in a written statement that they had not spoken to family members and acquaintances.

“We have not said they are uncooperative,” Thoemmes said.

“Since then, their family attorney has reached out and made some arrangements for some of their family to meet with us to give us a statement,” she said.

There are other friends and acquaintances, who police have been unable to connect with due to being at work, not being at home or other circumstances.

She said other items such as a photo album, have been recovered throughout the wider search area by HPD, other agencies and community members. Thoemmes declined to identify who was in the photos.

Isabella is described as of Caucasian and mixed-race, 3 feet, 3 inches tall, and 46 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
