A 25-year-old Kau man has been charged for a string of property crimes in the Kona area.

Lane Turner on Tuesday was charged by the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney with first-degree burglary, two counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and second-degree criminal tampering for alleged crimes that took place on Sunday and Monday.

Around 9 p.m. Sunday, according to HPD, a 77-year-old woman on Malulani Drive reported to police that she observed an unknown man inside her vehicle as she was leaving a friend’s house. She confronted the man who fled but said took things from the vehicle.

While investigation, police received another call about a man walking around a residence on the same road. Police found what they believed to be stolen items.

The next morning, at around 7 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a call of a man sleeping in a vehicle that wasn’t his at an apartment complex on Kuakini Highway. The victim confronted the man, who fled on foot and left behind what police believed to be stolen items.

Later that morning, police responded to a residence, again on Malulani Drive, after receiving a call from a 63-year-old man who said items from his garage and vehicle were missing. While investigating, police found out that another vehicle on the same block, owned by a 59-year-old woman, had also been broken into and items taken from it.

On Monday around 1 p.m. officers saw and attempted to contact Turner, who ran to Alii Drive near Hale Halawai, jumped into the ocean and swam 200 yards from shore. Police, on a rescue boat and with assistance from the Hawaii Fire Department, apprehended Turner at sea.

He was charged on Tuesday and his bail is set at $56,500.
