Kumu Kahua Theatre is kicking off a monthly playwriting contest this month and will allow the public to watch its entire 50th season of productions free of charge for one weekend.
The Go Try PlayWrite contest, held in collaboration with Bamboo Ridge Press, requires each entrant to write a five-page monologue or a 10-page scene, based on a monthly prompt. A confrontation between a person and a cockroach is this month’s prompt.
Kumu Kahua Theatre Artistic Director Harry Wong III will choose the prompt on the first of the month, and the due date will always be the last day of the month. There is no charge to enter. All entries must be written in traditional play format; instructions on this format can be found at dramatistsguild.com/script-formats.
There will be one winner each month. Scripts will be submitted to the judges anonymously. Winners will receive $20 and a subscription to Bamboo Ridge Press.
The theater’s 50th Season Festival of Plays will be shown from 6 a.m. Saturday and through the end of the day Sunday on youtube.com/KumuKahuaTheatre.
During these two days, viewers will have access to Moses Goods’ “Lovey Lee,” Lee Cataluna’s “Aloha Attire,” Hannah Ii-Epstein’s “Aloha Fry-Day,” Daniel A. Kelin II’s “other: a micro-story” and Susan Soon He Stanton’s “Untitled TMT Project.” A closed-captioned option will be available on all productions.
