Honolulu firefighters battled a fire that broke out at an apartment in the Punchbowl area just before midnight Monday.

Six units with more than 20 firefighters responded to the blaze at a two-story apartment building on Captain Cook Avenue at about 11:55 p.m., said the Honolulu Fire Department.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke emanating from the second floor of the structure.

HFD said “hoarder conditions” in a unit hindered efforts to quickly put out the flames. There were no occupants in the apartment at the time.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 12:09 a.m. and extinguished it a half-hour later.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at $148,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire department noted there were no smoke alarms in the unit.

The American Red Cross is assisting two adults who were displaced by the fire.
