Ocean Safety lifeguards rescue visitors in waters off Kalama Beach Park
Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to two separate cases involving two California visitors who ran into trouble in waters off of Kalama Beach Park Sunday.
Ocean Safety responded to the first call of an unresponsive swimmer approximately 40 yards offshore just before 11:15 a.m., said Shayne Enright, spokeswoman of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.
Good Samaritans brought the swimmer, a 49-year-old California visitor, to shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Ocean Safety took over.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and conducted life-saving treatment. The swimmer was taken in critical condition to a hospital.
Enright noted there is no lifeguard tower at Kalama Beach Park.
Shortly after 6:20 p.m., Ocean Safety responded to a second call of a 44-year-old California man in distress in waters off the beach park.

Witnesses said the visitor was trying to rescue his daughter at the time.
Enright said the man and his daughter managed to make it shore with the help of a relative.
Ocean Safety provided treatment until Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over. EMS administered life-saving treatment and took the man in serious condition to a hospital.
