UPDATE: 6 p.m.

Hilda was barely holding onto its hurricane status with 75 mph as it churns harmlessly in the open East Pacific about 2,100 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to keep weakening and be a “post-tropical remnant low” as it nears the Central Pacific Friday.

Hilda is one of three storms being monitored by the Miami-based hurricane center.

Former Tropical Depression Nine-E has a 70 percent chance of reforming into a depression. The storm system is about 500 miles southwest of Hilda. Forecasters it to regain its tropical depression status in the next few days, but further development is not expected as it moves west-northwest over cooler water.

Much closer to the west coast of Mexico, Tropical Storm Ignacio is expected to dissipate in two days.

None of the storms present a threat to land.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE

Hurricane Hilda did not change in strength overnight. However, the former Tropical Depression Ten-E did strengthen to a tropical storm in the East Pacific.

Clocking in with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, Hilda was located about 2,155 miles east-southeast of Hilo as of 5 a.m. today and moving northwest at 7 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Weather officials expect Hilda to continue weakening Tuesday through midweek. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from Hilda’s center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ten-E strengthened into Tropical Storm Ignacio. Packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, Ignacio was located about 2,677 miles east of Hilo at 5 a.m. today while moving west-northwest near 10 mph, according to the NHC.

Although forecasters do not expect any significant change in Ignacio’s wind speed today, some changes in its forward speed are expected over the next couple of days. Weakening is expected to begin tonight or Tuesday morning, with Ignacio forecast to become a remnant low by Tuesday night.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles, mainly northeast of Ignacio’s center.
