>> Due to popular demand, “Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” has been extended until Sept. 26. More than 300 of Van Gogh’s artworks are projected life-size onto the walls of Kamehameha Exhibit Hall III at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. $23-$89. Info: vangoghhonolulu.com
>> Bishop Museum has its own First Friday program, After Hours, from 5-8 p.m., with live music and food truck grinds. Currently on display are “Pow! Wow! The First Decade: From Hawai‘i to the World”; and “(Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawai‘i,” based on photographs and busts of Native Hawaiians collected during the 1920s that were to be used in a study associated with eugenics. $16.95-$24.95, with discounts available. >> At the Hawaii State Art Museum, the exhibit “Mucho Botanico” is in its final weeks. California artist Sofia Enriquez, now based in Manoa, creates works that explore identity, symbolism and feminism, using murals and large-scale paintings, as well as her fashion line Mucho. >> The Honolulu Museum of Art hosts HoMA Summer Nights on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 5:30 p.m. Live music and food are offered at the cafe on Fridays. On Saturdays, live music will be in the Central Courtyard, with DJ sets at the cafe, and workshops and other activities at the HoMA Shop from 6-8 p.m. Free. Paid admission ($10-$20 for adults) is required to enter galleries, which are currently featuring “Joyful Return,” a community-based art project; “Hokusai’s Mount Fuji,” an exploration of Hokusai’s famous “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”; “Kamran Samimi: In Stillness,” featuring works by the current artist in residence at Shangri La, Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design; and “Optical Impact,” a collection of paintings in which geometric patterns, blurred lines and clashing color palettes combine to create illusion in the viewer’s mind. >> To commemorate surfing’s debut at the Olympics, Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort is exhibiting a surfboard mural by renowned surf artist Eduardo Bolioli. The exhibit will expand later in August with a mixed-media surfing display presented in partnership with Bishop Museum, celebrating the Aug. 24 birthday of Duke Kahanamoku. >> The 2021 Young Artists of Hawai‘i Student Art Exhibition features works by local students created under the theme “My Culture, My Family, and Me.” The annual competition was open to all Hawaii public and private school students in grades K-6, with judges selecting 96 for the exhibition.
