Las Vegas Advisor: Las Vegas reinstitutes full mask mandate

The masks are back.

Nevada’s governor has issued a new mandate that masks must be worn in public places, whether you’re vaccinated or not. The rule applies indoors only, and includes all casinos, restaurants and bars in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada.

The new rule went into effect Friday and follows an earlier edict that all employees at businesses be masked. The rule does not apply to show members and musicians performing indoors and no additional precautionary measures were directed aside from casinos being instructed to update their signage accordingly. The previous mask order was discontinued in May.

No date has been given for a lifting or reevaluation of this incarnation.

MGM requirement: MGM Resorts has announced a requirement that employees either upload their proof of a full vaccination against COVID or submit to getting testing every week at a cost to them of $15 for each test. The dictum went out via email Monday to the company’s 35,000 workers worldwide, estimated to be down from 70,000 prepandemic.

Vickie’s returns: White Cross Drugs, which operated for 48 years on Las Vegas Blvd. South, was known for its landmark diner, first named Tiffany’s Cafe, then renamed Vickie’s Diner. Even after White Cross closed in 2012, Vickie’s remained open until August 2020. Now, Vickie’s has reopened at the venerable Commercial Center, about 3 miles east of the Strip, serving the same menu that made it famous.

Beverly Theater: Work is expected to begin this fall on a new downtown entertainment venue called the Beverly Theater. The smallish two-story, 14,000-foot building will host independent film, live music, arts performances, literary experiences, and educational programming and is expected to open in 2022.

Question: I can’t believe Main Street Station downtown still hasn’t reopened. Is it possible it will stay closed for good?

Answer: Boyd Gaming bosses recently addressed that during an earnings call: “We are in the process of making plans to potentially reopen Main Street Station.” There’s nothing definitive in that statement regarding timing, but it also sounds like a permanent closure is unlikely and that a near-term reopening may be in the works.
