3 hikers airlifted from Oahu trails
A 56-year-old woman who was having difficulty breathing on the Kuliouou Ridge Trail and two hikers who were stuck on the Kaau Crater Trail needed to be airlifted to safety this afternoon.
At 3:26 p.m. the Honolulu Fire Department responded to a call to rescue a hiker at the Kuliouou Ridge Trail in Aina Haina. The hiker and her 34-year-old son, who are both Hawaii residents, had been hiking for about 10 hours when the mother “began to experience chest pains and was having difficulty breathing.”
Firefighters made contact at 4:56 p.m. and provided basic medical life support to the hiker. They put her on a stretcher, and HFD’s Air 1 airlifted her to a landing zone at Kuliouou Valley Park. The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services was waiting at the landing zone to provide further care.
At 4:47 p.m., HFD received a call about two lost hikers on the Kaau Crater Trail in Palolo.
The hikers, a 45-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, who were visiting from Maryland began hiking at around 12:30 p.m. but were unable to descend from the trail on their own, HFD said.
Air 1 located the hikers near the trail’s summit at 5:08 p.m. and landed nearby. They were transported to a landing zone at the Palolo Valley District Park at 5:28 p.m. uninjured.
