A 38-year-old hiker who injured his ankle while on the Lulumahu Falls Trail was carried out of the trail on a stretcher this morning, the Honolulu Fire Department reported.

Firefighters responded to a call at 11:21 a.m. about an injured hiker on the trail, and just after 11:30 a.m., two firefighters were on the trail to make contact with him. HFD said the man twisted his right leg, injuring his ankle.

Windy conditions prevented HFD’s Air 1 from airlifting the man from the trail, so seven HFD personnel hiked about three-quarters of a mile to reach him. They packaged him on a stretcher and began carrying him out just before 12:30 p.m. At around 1:20 p.m. he was transferred to the care of the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

The hiker was on the trail with his adult niece and her two friends, who were not injured. They were able to exit the trail on their own.
