Overnight fire destroys apparently abandoned home in Maili
The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating a fire that destroyed an apparently abandoned home in Maili overnight.
Twelve units with more than 35 firefighters responded to the blaze at 87-794 Farrington Highway near the intersection of Maipalaoa Road shortly before midnight.
Firefighters reported that the single-family house was engulfed in flames which were visible from half a mile away.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 12:45 a.m. today and extinguished it a half-hour later.
Emergency Medical Services personnel also evaluated a 23-year-old neighbor who suffered smoke inhalation. She refused to be taken to a hospital.
The cause of the fire and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.

No injuries were reported. HFD said the home appeared to be abandoned. Neighbors said squatters have been using the house.
Police closed the highway for about two hours while firefighters responded to the fire.
Firefighters returned to the home at about 7:45 a.m. after wisps of smoke were seen emanating from shingles on a small section of the roof.
