The Honolulu Fire Department today rescued a 36-year-old Ewa Beach woman who was kayaking between Oneʻula (Hau Bush) Beach and White Plains Beach in Ewa Beach when her kayak capsized.

HFD said the woman’s husband called 911 at 12:38 p.m. today to report he was aboard the kayak along with their son when it flipped about 500 yards from shore. The man also told a dispatcher his wife had not been wearing a flotation device at the time.

Five units, staffed with 16 personnel, responded and immediately began searching for the woman upon the first unit’s arrival at 12:48 p.m.

About 10 minutes later, HFD and Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards noticed a body on a reef near shore, confirmed it was the missing woman and transported her to White Plains Beach, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed in addition to the use of an automated external defibrillator.

The woman was transported in critical condition by American Medical Response paramedics to a nearby hospital at 1:50 p.m.

HFD did not say if the husband or son required rescue or any medical attention during the incident.
