Halawa Correctional Facility has 9 new cases of COVID-19, all recently transferred inmates from Hilo jail

The Halawa Correctional Facility had nine positive COVID-19 test results out of 20 inmates tested, the Department of Public Safety said in a news release this afternoon.

All nine inmates were recently transferred from the overcrowded Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo, PSD said.

The remaining 11 tested at Halawa were negative for the coronavirus.

The inmates were already in a mandatory transfer-related quarantine due to the cluster of cases and overcrowded conditions at HCCC, PSD said.

The HCCC reported today it now has 42 recovered inmates, bringing the total number of recovered inmates to 167.

Public Safety says COVID-19 testing is continuously being done at all its facilities.

Other results shared today are as follows:

All 66 Oahu Community Correctional Center inmates tested had negative results.

The Women’s Community Correctional Center had three negative test results.

“PSD continues to encourage all staff and inmates to voluntarily get tested and receive he COVID vaccination,” PSD said in the news release.
