Distressed swimmer rescued off Hawaii Kai
A swimmer in distress in waters 30 yards off of a popular Hawaii Kai location called “Spitting Caves” was rescued this afternoon by the Honolulu Fire Department.
Five resource units staffed with approximately 20 personnel responded.
The first fire fighters arrived at the scene at 5:47 p.m. and inserted two rescue swimmers shortly after arrival. Two canoe paddlers in the area, each with a one-man canoe, made their way to the swimmer. The distressed swimmer used the one-man canoe as a flotation device until HFD swimmers made contact.
When HFD’s personnel made contact with the distressed swimmer, they indicated the need for HFD’s Rescue 1 Boat to assist with bringing the distressed swimmer into Maunalua Bay Beach Park due to the shoreline terrain and wave heights.
HFD’s Rescue 1 Boat loaded the distressed swimmer and HFD personnel at 6:05 p.m. and proceeded to Maunalua Bay Beach Park. The distressed swimmer and HFD personnel arrived at Maunalua Bay Beach Park at approximately 6:18 p.m.
The swimmer was not injured and the services of Emergency Medical Services were not requested.
