Ewa garage fire causes $70,000 in damage; no injuries

Nine people safely evacuated this morning from an Ewa house where fire broke out in its garage.

The blaze caused an estimated $64,000 in damage to the garage structure and $6,000 to its contents.

The Honolulu Fire Department said neighbors saw smoke and alerted the occupants. The home had working smoke detectors and activated as the occupants were already evacuating, HFD said.

HFD received the call at 7:43 a.m. for a fire at 91-1159 Kamakana St. in the Seabridge by Gentry community.

Seven units with 23 personnel responded to the blaze.

The caller said the overhead garage door melted from the heat of the fire and blew out the garage door windows.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
