The towering lacy mushroom from the atomic cannon’s first test rises from desert floor at Frenchman’s flat, near Las Vegas, Nevada on May 25, 1953. The 280-mm gun which tossed the shell to its destination six or seven mile away is in the foreground. The rifle was touched off electrically, with the gun-loading crew entrenched a safe distance away. This picture, released on May 27, by the air force, was made probably about 10 seconds after the explosion.

In less than three seconds, the bar can mix any of up to 1,200 different drinks of from one drop to 64 ounces, price, tax and record the sale, and print a check for the customer. While occasional outbursts are heard against people of Japanese ancestry who move into cities or rural communities, thousands are quietly doing war jobs and living normal lives. Since 110,000 Japanese –Americans and Japanese were evacuated from their west coast homes in 1942, approximately 22,000 have left WRA relocation centers to take jobs and establish homes in various parts of the country. The evacuees become eligible for relocation after they establish their loyalty to the United States. These photos show some of the relocated men at work. Two Americans of Japanese parentage load scrap metal which will be used against the axis. This bomb dropped in a yard, wrecking the hen coop in background. A girl was injured elsewhere in Essex and 11 men were injured in Yorkshire by bombs the same day.

A section of the new 9,117-foot Brooklyn-battery tunnel, the longest vehicular tunnel in the United States shown April 25, 1950, which opens to the public on May 25. The new link under the East River between the tip of Manhattan and Brooklyn will cost $80,000,000 when finished. This view looks toward Brooklyn. An official?s car speeds along. The tunnel is just about complete except for removing temporary lighting, center, used during construction.
