Hawaii health officials urge the public to stay out of Manoa stream and Ala Moana Boat Harbor after sewage spill

A raw sewage spill totalling 30,850 gallons in Manoa on Thursday has ended, the Honolulu Department of Environmental Services said in a press release this afternoon.

The department said heavy rains had caused a sanitary sewer overflow of untreated wastewater, which discharged out of a manhole at 27or Lowrey Ave. in Manoa; the address was changed Friday from an earlier report of 2710 Kaaipu Ave.

Of the total 30,850 gallons spilled, ENV crews were able to recover 28,916 gallons, the release said.

Approximately 1,934 gallons entered a nearby storm drain that discharges into Manoa Stream.

The Hawaii state Department of Health is advising the public to stay out of the waters of Manoa stream below Lowrey Avenue, and at the Ala Moana Boat Harbor and canoe launch area, and said warning signs would be posted today.

ENV said it received a call at 4:48 p.m. Thursday, arrived at the site at 5:20 p.m. and the spill ended at 9:40 p.m.

The site was cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized, the department said.
