One of Hawaii’s most striking equipment centers held its first public showing when the new U.S. Industries Inc. facility opened at Sand Island Road and Nimitz Highway. The nearly 100,000-square-foot facility will serve as a distribution and maintenance center for basic machinery and equipment used in manufacturing, construction and farming. The facility’s aluminum and glass building — the first of its kind in Hawaii — is encased in aluminum panels with a two-story glass and porcelain front.

“I really feel we’re going to have an elegant store,” said Edmund A. Attebury, vice president and general manager of American Factors’ retail division and its Liberty House stores, as he showed off construction of the Liberty House store at Ala Moana Center. With the store’s opening, slated for April 1966, Liberty House will become Hawaii’s largest department store concern, both in terms of sales volume and retail space, more than doubling the square footage of its closest competitor in the islands, Sears Roebuck & Co., Attebury said.

Berta Donaldson, Honolulu’s first meter maid, said she won’t mind giving parking tickets to violators, “if they are deserved.” Berta, a native of Portland, Ore., who came to Hawaii on a vacation in 1962 and decided to stay, was named to the post by Traffic Engineer Henry Tuck Au.

Alan S. Davis Memorial Park is about to be dedicated at Merchant and Bethel streets. Davis, a corporate executive and James Campbell Estate trustee, was an astute, tough-minded businessman who had a deep respect for the law. He was also a farmer, cattle rancher and widely regarded as a gentleman.

This 330-ton backhoe, which was being used to dredge the Barbers Point deep-draft harbor, sits idle near the harbor awaiting repairs after it slid into 40 feet of seawater. Operators for Peter Kiewit Sons managed to get the $3.5 million monster back on land last week by “walking” it up a ramp, officials said.
