Giant torches blazed during a parade Jan. 7 seeking a year of protection from illness at the Oniyo fire festival, a tradition believed to be 1,600 years old. Sparks that fly over the heads of spectators are said to bring blessings of good health. The festival, designated an intangible folk cultural property by Japan’s government, was held at Daizenji Tamataregu shrine in Kurume, Fukuoka prefecture.
