New Year’s means it’s mochi-making time at the George Fukunaga household in Alewa Heights and in hundreds of other Hawaii homes. After Fukunaga family members pounded rice into flour in the old-time manner, the women and girls in the family shaped the completed delicacy into small cakes. The traditional Japanese custom is aimed at bringing prosperity and happiness for the new year.

Prospective bidders examine the catch at Maeda Fish Market in the old Otani Building near Aala Park, where the fish auction is held each morning at 6 a.m. Fresh mahimahi was among the bargains, with the fish selling for about $2.75 a pound and reports of a good supply.
