Hawaii’s hottest high school bowling rivalry has ended in a tie.
Kapolei’s Jayna Yockman beat Pearl City’s Samantha Kanehailua by 25 pins to win the Hawaii Army National Guard/HHSAA Bowling Championships at the Schofield Bowling Center on Friday, matching the Charger with her second state title.
Yockman took the title away from Kanehailua in 2022 when both were sophomores and Kanehailua won it back last year. They finished first and second in three of their four high school state tournaments.
Yockman rolled games of 240, 169, 218, 178, 210, 181, 243, 203 to win four of the eight rounds but led the entire way. Kanehailua had scores of 227, 180, 190, 196, 203, 186, 222 and 213 and trailed Yockman by 35 pins going into the final round.
Not only did the top two bowlers finish their prep careers in a deadlock as individuals, Kanehailua and Pearl City took the team title for the second year in a row to match the two that Kapolei earned in Yockman’s freshman and sophomore years.
Junior Alicen Ichimura helped the Chargers with a third-place individual finish, followed by Kaila Kamahia in 11th, Jayda Kanaka’ole in 20th and Journey Abadilla in 23rd. Kamehameha finished second and Mid-Pacific took third. Yockman was Kapolei’s lone bowler in the competition.
Pearl City swept the team titles for the first time since 2015, with the boys outlasting OIA rival Mililani and defending champion Hawaii Baptist. The Chargers knocked down 1,004 pins in the first round and 1,015 in the last — the only school to break quadruple digits in the tournament — to top the Trojans by 498 pins and the Golden Eagles by 555.
Freshman Ryder Baisac took the individual title by 34 pins, denying senior teammate Jayden Kadooka a repeat state championship. Baisac entered the final day up by just seven pins but rolled three straight games over 200, including a 224 to close.
The Chargers were helped to the title by freshman Trenton Ichimura in seventh, senior Titan Vickery in 21st and junior Maddox Cayetano in 27th. The Chargers won their 14th team title in 50 state tournaments, no other school has more than six. Baisac is the seventh Charger to win the individual crown and next year can be just the second boy to repeat, joining Kristopher Yadao of Pearl City in 2015. No boy has won more than two.
Mililani sophmore Ryson Ishizaki began the event with a tournament-high 266 but slipped to fifth by the end of the competition behind senior Shane DeRego of Kamehameha in third and ‘Iolani freshman Ezra Bentkowski in fourth.
