Isle artist Juliet May Fraser celebrated her 83rd birthday by printing an etching at the University of Hawaii printmaking workshop. While she concentrated, about 70 of her fellow artists came into the workshop to surprise her with a birthday cake and a party.

Army Capt. Lloyd A. Epperson of Ewa Beach, left; his wife; and son David, 16, celebrate the Schofi eld Barracks offi cer’s victory over 3 million other entrants in a national puzzle contest to claim $60,500 and a new car. Epperson estimates he worked for two years to prepare to solve the complex word and number puzzles. The Eppersons plan to put their windfall toward paying off the mortgage on the family home in California, establishing a $5,000 education fund for David — in case he doesn’t get into West Point — bringing daughter Mrs. Kenneth Hall of Glen Burnie, Md., and her husband to Hawaii for a vacation, and investing whatever remains.

Officials from the state, architects Charles Luckman Associates, Hawaiian Dredging & Construction Co. and engineers from Rollair Systems Inc. were on hand for the fi rst test of the system that will allow sections of the new Aloha Stadium to move on a cushion of air, transforming in minutes from football to baseball confi guration and back. Only the southeast quadrant of the stadium was involved in the fi rst test of the “compliant air bearing” system designed by Rollair.
