Senior citizens get a free lunch at Aala Park under the auspices of Area-Wide Opportunities for Senior Citizens. The program provides a hot meal and some socialization for about 500 needy people over age 60, Monday through Friday at five sites in the Kalihi-Palama area. The lunches, essentially the same as those served in public school cafeterias, are 75% funded by the federal government, with the rest covered by the state and city and county. “It broadens their horizons. It cheers them up. And of course, it means that they will have at least one hot, nourishing meal that day. For many it’s the only meal of the day,” said project coordinator Wendell Silva.
