Honolulu police said that a hotel employee who had been sent to the man’s room this afternoon was confronted by the man who was armed with what “appeared to be a knife.”
The man then barricaded himself in the room. HPD Specialized Services officers are responding, and police have said that the public should avoid the area.
Jessica Lani Rich, president and CEO of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, said police contacted the nonprofit to assist in evacuating people from the 229 Paoakalani Ave. location where the incident was taking place. Rich said evacuees were taken to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, where they are in a Tapa Tower ballroom.
The nonprofit VASH, which assists visitors in crisis, is providing food for the stranded people, while Hilton Hawaiian Village is providing water and blankets.
“As soon as the barricade situation is over, VASH will provide transportation for all of the guests to get back to the hotel,” Rich said.
