Maui County firefighters said a 30-year-old man suffered burns to his leg following an accidental brush fire in Kula Monday.

The brushfire was reported at about 11:23 a.m. Monday along Pulehu Nui Road in Kula, according to the Maui Fire Department. Four units and the Air 1 helicopter responded and arrived on scene to find a working brushfire with strong Kona winds of about 20 mph.

Firefighters contained the fire at about 12:05 p.m. and extinguished it at 2 p.m.

In all, about 1 acre of brush was burned, and a vehicle was damaged, but no estimate was available.

The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center by medics for treatment.

MFD says the fire may have been ignited by the vehicle’s exhaust making contact with dry brush.
