Kauai man is county’s 4th traffic fatality following crash

Kauai police say a 66-year-old man died after rear-ending a car on Kaumualii Highway Sunday afternoon.

Police have identified the man as Ronald Britton of Omao.

According to a preliminary report, Britton was driving a Toyota Tacoma eastbound on the highway at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday when he rear-ended a Nissan Sentra driven by a 62-year-old man from Washington state. The Tacoma lost control and rolled into a ditch.

Paramedics from American Medical Response responded to the crash, and pronounced Britton dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Sentra and his passenger were not injured.

Police closed Kaumualii Highway near mile marker 6 in both directions for about two-and-a-half hours for the on-scene investigation.

At this time, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, but toxicology reports are pending as the investigation continues.

Police said it is the county’s fourth traffic-related fatality this year.
