With a loud boom, the Waikiki Biltmore Hotel starts to collapse in the middle as its demolition gets underway. A huge crowd came to watch the building buckle and fall; when it was over, nothing remained but rubble.

Champion kite maker Richard T.C. Ching, 71, of Kaimuki shows off some of his colorful creations. Ching was born on Maui but spent a few years of his childhood in his family’s village in China, where he watched others make kites and was inspired to learn the craft. Ching estimates he has built 350 kites in his lifetime, in traditional Chinese style made of rice paper supported by frames of split bamboo, which he harvests in Nuuanu.
